A loud explosion caused me to pop up from my bed. The sun shone through the cracks of the curtains, so it had to be morning. I hurried to the window and looked out. Jett’s truck was on fire. From what I could see, it didn’t look salvageable. I grabbed my robe and pulled it on, then ran through the house to the front door.

The door was open, and Eric stood in the doorway. His arms were crossed over his chest against the bitter cold. I grabbed my boots and pulled them on. I moved past Eric and saw Jett walking around his truck.

José stood off to the side, watching the truck burn. I could hear others behind me coming outside to see what was happening.

I rushed over to Jett. “Shouldn’t we try to put it out?”

He placed his arm over my shoulders. “No. It’s gone. It’s too cold to use the hose, and we still can’t call anyone.”

“I’m sorry.”

“The truck’s not the problem. Silvia’s body was in there.”

“Right.”

“I’m probably going to get fired. I’ve screwed this entire thing up.”

I put my arm around him. “That’s not true.”

He sighed and pulled me closer.

“What happened?” Lionel asked.

“Someone was trying to destroy evidence,” Jett said, not bothering to release me.

“What evidence?”

“We found Silvia’s body. We put it in the truck to keep it safe.”

“I’d call that a failure,” Lionel said.

Jett nodded.

“We just have to let it burn itself out,” Kyle said. “It should be alright with the snow all around.”

“I’ll stay out and make sure no rogue flames catch anything else on fire,” José offered. “Breakfast is ready and on the table.”

“Come join us,” Lionel said. “All of you.” Everyone from the house was outside. I wondered if he really meant everyone. It turned out he did. He even had Eric, Maria, and Callie at the table. I couldn’t imagine Silvia would have ever done this.

We all sat quietly at the table, eating José’s pancakes.

Callie kept shooting dirty looks at Kyle, but he only smiled. Maria sat next to me. Her cheeks were pink, and she looked cold and tired. She also smelled like gasoline. I would have to tell Jett. Clint wasn’t eating pancakes. He just took an occasional drink from his bottle.

Eric looked uncomfortable. He’d been working here for years and had probably never sat down with the family. He sat with Jennifer on one side and Amanda on the other. The Griffins looked like they would rather be anywhere but here.

I tried eating my pancakes, but they felt too thick to swallow. Maria had to have been the one to blow up the truck. Why else would she smell like gas? She might also have been the one to kill Silvia. She had been the one to find her first, and she’d had reason to want Silvia out of the way.

“We were told there was a lot of security when we came,” I said. “Are there cameras?”

“No cameras,” Lionel said. “Silvia was worried people would use cameras against us. She was paranoid about things like that.
